All USA service providers APN setting for Android- list. APN setting is necessary when you want to run internet on your mobile phone using the services provided by your Cellular Network service provider (Carrier). In general, APN setting is being provided by Cellular Service provider but if you have any problem associated with the APN settings received then you can also set it manually with ease. Almost all APN settings have same fields but the value corresponding to those fields may differ based on some parameters.

Here I will discuss about what the APN setting fields actually mean and why they are required. It is not necessary that you cannot use them without knowing them. Of course, you can but in my views if you go though the definition and usage of them then it will be easier to use APN setting no matter which cellular mobile network you are using.

So let us discuss the terminologies of APN settings in detail in order to have a deeper and clear understanding.

Terminologies of APN settings:

  • Name: This is just a name given to our APN settings and it has no effect on our APN settings. This
  • Access Point Name: Access point name is a name given to a gateway between Mobile Network (3G, 4G and GPRS) and a computer network usually a public network. This is one of the most important fields of APN setting. By this field, your cellular network provider identifies several settings on their end.
  • Proxy: This is an optional field for specifying the HTTP proxy address. Generally this field is left blank.
  • Port: This field is used in conjunction with the proxy otherwise left blank.
  • Username and Password: This is an optional field but sometimes used to authenticate point-to-point connection between your android phone and your mobile network provider.
  • Server: In most of the cases this field is left blank.
  • MMSC: This field is set to MMSC address so that one can send and receive MMS messages.
  • MMS Proxy and MMS Port: These fields are also used for MMS messaging.
  • MCC and MNC: Mobile Country Code (MCC) and Mobile Network code (MNC) field are used in conjunction with each other. These are mandatory fields. Each country has unique value for MCC and MNC. For example- MCC for USA varies from 310-316 and for India 404-405. So each country can have one or more MCC. On the other hand, MNC varies from region to region in a particular country.
  • Authentication Type: This field contains variety of options like PAP, CHAP, PAP OR CHAP and none.
  • APN Type: This is a mandatory field that specifies your data connection type. The set of values for this field would be Internet, MMS or BOTH.
